How to reach meaningful goals this year.
This is a paid newsletter. Welcome to our new subscribers. Today marks the second Wednesday of the month, and I am writing the Monthly Letter to our paid subscribers of The Independent Thinking. This is a particularly special edition.
In this issue, I am sharing an in-depth report on Goals and Execution. We encourage readers to take the time to read it carefully, print it if useful, and, above all, put it into practice. Consider how far consistent execution can take you. I will see you next week with our Weekly Thoughts.
It pays to think independently.
Dear reader,

Introduction
Today, I’m going to share with you some thoughts on how to reach your goals this year.
These are some of the practices that have helped myself to design my life, and inspired entrepreneurs, executives, investors, artists, atleths, and people from every walk of life.
I’m writing this in the 7th day of the year, as I have my goals printed in front of me for somedays and yesterday attending a client I realized how important it is to write about this to all readers that have the desire to improve.
On our meeting he reminded me that I made the same kind of question for him, last year and he didn’t know what his goals were. For this year, he knew five objectives he wanted to accomplish and shared with me. Three were professional and two personal, in his case.
Generally people think about goals in January, some, although I write my goals between December and January, you can use this same structure wherever you want. It makes no difference, it’s only the case of starting when you want.
Beggining your practice
What would you need to do this, depends on how you prefer to express yourself, the hows are always a matter of tastes, so try different tastes as you wish. You can do it on your computer, on your tablet if you have one, or in your smartphone. You can either use a program to do it, or start on your phone or taking notes on your paper. As you wish, as its matches your taste.
What I use to do is to write my goals on paper on my notes, then, I continue writing it on my phone as the ideas continue to flow to me during the day. When I think I get it, I rewrite than on my daily notes, on paper, before putting it on the computer to print and keep it on my desk during the year.
Now it’s your time to choose how you are going to start, use paper, colors, pen, pencil, tablet, phone, computer, whatever you do, it doens’t matter the way you do, however it will be crucial to choose to do it in a way you feel good.
Where to do it
The place you choose is really important, however, it doesn’t need to be a scene of a movie, if you can write it on vacation or your mini-retirements, great, if you write at home, awesome, and if you choose to write it at nature, the beach, or it’s really up to you. Some write in the office, which is also a good option, just don’t forget to include your life out of the office as well. It can be even when you are taking a break in a place you like.
Yesterday, on our meeting, I thought him, that I wrote my goals on vacation, or my mini-retirements. I didn’t sit to write my goals, whoever it came to me when I was having an excellent peaceful day. I know it doen’t happen by accident. The calmer we are, the better our nervosystem works, so it was expected that if I was calm and relaxed, good ideas would flow to me, the kind of ideas that make you feel good and inspired to self-improve.
So I took the hotel’s notepad, as told him, and wrote my thoughts on paper. It allowed this thoughts to flow to me during the next days as I would grab my pen, and keep writing my goals on my notes. As I was travelling I kept two notepads with me, in case I needed, so I could be present during all vacation, I wasn’t bothered about remind my goals, as it where taking from the idea plane, to the physical plane. Then I could grab my ideas with me, and read wherever I wanted, I didn’t need to remind my thoughts – they often change – so I took them, enjoyed the day and reserved some minutes to rewrite them when I thought the ideas were more mature.
How to do it.
5 Things.
Take 5 things that you want to accomplish this year, make it goal oriented, based on the S.M.A.R.T. goal setting framework. You can decide on 5 wishes you want to bring to the physical world, personally and professionaly. I consider essential to transform your wishes in goals, and this is one of the most common mistakes people make, that is, wishful thinking.
So determine 5 goals, that you want to accomplish this yer, however, keep an open mind, ‘cause you my accomplish them by the end of the season, and that will be amazing. So imagine that this 5 goals, will be easy, so you will gain an extra 5 wishes coming to reality this year. Keep expecting the good.
5 Not-to-do things.
I wonder how fun you may get thinking on what you don’t want to achieve. Take 5 things, maybe more, and write them on paper. Imagine all the lost time you got last year, the bad relationships, the mistakes, the wrong behaviour, the stressful situations and write down. Now revert it, make it a goal. Transform it in a positive way so you will have an goal not to behave in a certain way.
As you know we love via negativa, and we truly belive we get more fun avoinding mistakes than trying to achieve something special. There’s a lot we can accomplish, however, generally, I believe the greatest results come by changing our not-so-deserving behaviours.
What next.
Now put it on paper, use colors, drawn, make notes, reprint, include some personal reminders and notes, images, financial plans, and keep it on your desk for the rest of the year, read it daily, often, make it habit to visit the good you are making.
Enjoy.
Cheers,
Marcelo Marini
